It's a cold day outside. Too cold for me to go outside with my friends. And I think because of that, I have more than enough reason to sit by the fireside, Hadyn in my lap. He looks exactly like the fire I'm burning in the fireplace, the wood upon which it burns, and he's taking a nap as I read a new book I've stumbled upon. I find that the book isn't actually new. In fact it's quite an old book, based on a real story, and I've seen the movie before. It's called Prayers For Bobby. I quite loved the movie when I had seen it on Lifetime, and when some of my pets brought it home one day I was very appreciative. I guess they knew I'd liked the movie. I didn't know where they'd gotten the money and frankly I didn't want to know, for fear that they'd stolen the poor book, but instead I was just thankful because I knew they had tried.

So I sat reading my book and as I did so, I pet little Hadyn on instinct as he dreamed on about whatever Komainus dreamed about. And as I did so, I heard something to the left of me, coming from the window. When I looked, however, nothing was there. I furrowed my brows in confusion, deciding my mind was playing tricks on me, and went back to my reading. I read for a few more minutes, before the noise was back. I looked back out the window, and once more there was nothing there.

"Hadyn.." I whispered, shaking the little one lightly to wake him. "Hadyn wake up.." Hadyn stirred and lifted his head sleepily at me. He cocked his head to the side, wondering what was going on. "I keep hearing this noise while I'm reading and it's coming from the window, but when I look there's nothing there." Hadyn looked over to the window and furrowed his brows the same way I had before. He rose from my lap and stood with me, and I set my book down, making sure to mark it first, and we went to investigate. As I open the front door I see a Shika. She's female, no antlers after all. I gasp slightly. She's wandering back and forth looking for a way into the house and she...looks just like Hadyn. I look at him and he looks clearly just as surprised as I am. This Shika looks JUST like him, colors and gradients and everything. She finally stops moving when she sees us at the door. I wonder why she's here.

"Umm..hello." I say the words gently, lovingly. "Please come inside." Hadyn and I move out of the way, letting her through the door, and I watch as she continues to look around for something. As she wanders into the kitchen I see it. I had left out a Shika Senbei on the counter. I was planning on using it later if I went out but it got too cold outside so I just left it out for possibly tomorrow. I wander in with Hadyn and pick it up from the counter to face her. "Is this what you're looking for?" She looks up and her eyes widen and she nods once.

Her eyes are such a beautiful, melted golden color and I can't believe she looks so much like Hadyn, save for his eyes looking like Christmas ornaments instead of melted gold. I give the Shika Senbei to her and she eats it. She's obviously starving and I don't know why she's gone without food this long, so I go around getting out other food that my Shikas like, and I let her eat as Hadyn and I watch her.

"You need an owner..don't you..?" I asked softly, worried about her state and wondering where she came from. Either she had been mistreated in the past or she was sick, but I was very concerned about her health at this point. At the question I asked, she lifted her head from the food I had given her and she nodded in a sad manner, looking away as if embarrassed. I sighed. "Come here.." I said softly.

As she did so I made sure to give her a lot of love and attention. I petted her lovingly and kissed her forehead, making sure to rub her belly and her back.

"I would absolutely love to take you in.." I started, "But..I know someone who would love you just as much, if not more. And I would love to keep you and call you my own, but she's a very good friend of mine who loves her pets dearly, and she's wanted a beautiful Shika like you for a long time. I don't think you wandered into my life on accident, pretty girl. I think this was meant to be something special." For a moment I ran off and she watched me go with a sad look in her eyes. Hadyn jumped on her back and hugged her from behind while I was gone, and I came back to find him rubbing up on her legs like a cat. I laughed. "Hadyn what are you doing?" He looked at me and smiled gently. He understood exactly what was going on with this Shika, and he wanted to help.

I set down the ribbon I had brought with me and I looked at her. "First of all, you need a name, so you don't arrive to her house without her knowing what your name is. So we're going to call you....."

I looked through a book of mine I'd also brought along, a baby name's book with different sections. I flipped through the fire section before I fell upon a name I thought perfect for her. "Makenna." I said the name and her ears perked, as if she already knew it was perfect for her. "Makenna is an English name meaning 'born of fire.' I think it's perfect for you, because like Hadyn here, both of you look like fire on wood in a fireplace, and you look like you even have little bits of smoke rising from your fur, little girl. I think it's lovely."

She nodded, and Makenna was the officially decided name for this little one. My friend and I had talked about names before, and I knew Makenna was also a name that she liked, so it was a good match.

"Now.." I started. "Hold still for a moment." She did as I asked and I measured around her neck with a tape measure, and after that, I got the appropriate amount of the ribbon I had brought. It was a very shiney, gold ribbon, and it matched up quite well with her eyes. When I cut the ribbon at its correct length, I tied it around her neck and made a bow. "There!" I said happily. "You look like a perfectly wrapped Christmas Present Shika!" I smiled and kissed her nose.

"Now then, Hadyn, I want you to show Makenna to Shell's house. You remember Shell, I'm sure. We've been over to her place plenty of times." Hadyn nodded in understanding. He knew that Shell had wanted a Shika for a long time, and he agreed that the idea to give Makenna to Shell was a good one.

"Makenna, Hadyn here is going to be really good friends with you I'm sure. He seems like he wants to play a lot with you as it is, and he's going to show you to your new home. He'll walk you there. When you get there, her name is Shell. She'll take really good care of you, I promise. She'll absolutely adore you."

Makenna smiled and nodded happily. "Shell will recognize Hadyn and she'll know that I sent you. I'll still be your friend, Makenna, and we'll have a lot of fun together, I promise. Now run along and get to Shell's house! She's going to love seeing you!"

I rushed them out the door, handing Makenna some extra food for the way since I knew she was probably still hungry, and watched as Hadyn walked her to Shell's house happily.

(Please give Makenna to =CrescentWalker. I am sending five points to add the shiny, golden ribbon tied in a bow around her neck, as well.)
